One thing I've heard (or maybe made up... in any case don't consider it scientific) is that Alzheimer's patients can be very affected by reminders. Old pictures, books, etc might put them in mind of that time. You might want to start documenting things happening now and surround him with that. Hell - even if I'm completely wrong there's benefit to the project.
