Judith was having a conversation the other night with someone and their take
on things was that we're arrogant for wanting to force our norms on others.
Things like no slavery, no pedophilia (child brides), no killing, etc. I
guess we can't force other countries to be civilized by our standards. Even
if the countries are part of the UN or other treaty groups we should not
force them to abide by those treaties because it would be arrogant to
enforce our norms. So bottom line is that everyone should stick their heads
in the sand and let everyone else do what they want. But isn't that what's
already happening? Slavery is rampant in Africa and no one is stopping it.
Why? Because we're already pulling back from enforcing our norms on others.

But here's where the argument falls down. If we should let other countries
and cultures 'grow' out of their barbaric (by our perspective) practices
then how should we act when people from those countries/cultures come to
ours? Should we respect their ideals or force compliance to our culture and
rules? If the argument goes one way then it goes the other as well. If
Muslims are migrating to European countries then they should conform to the
laws of those countries. If Europeans are migrating to Muslim countries
(they're not allowed to) then they should comply to their laws. Its a two
way street.
So when a German court allows a husband to beat his wife because its part of
his religion, he should be stopped because its not the local norms. If a man
has multiple wives he should be stopped as that is not conforming to the
local norms. If we should respect them, whoever them might be, then they
should respect us.

Problem is, 'they' don't respect us or our norms while we are expected to
respect theirs. So we're playing by the rules and they're not. Result?
They'll win. Whoever they may be.
