You might be referring to Philippians 2:12-13

"Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed-not only in my
presence, but now much more in my absence-continue to work out your
salvation with fear and trembling, 13for it is God who works in you to will
and to act according to his good purpose."

I have heard it misquoted as, 'work out your *own* salvation' which could be
interpreted as a keep-it-to-yourself thing. Just a shot in the dark
though...

It's hard to imagine Paul the Apostle telling people that faith is a private
thing when he traveled all over the Roman empire preaching about Jesus
Christ. On the flipside, he didn't tell his readers to take over the
government and impose Christianity by force either.
