You might be referring to Philippians 2:12-13 "Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed-not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence-continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, 13for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose."
I have heard it misquoted as, 'work out your *own* salvation' which could be interpreted as a keep-it-to-yourself thing. Just a shot in the dark though... It's hard to imagine Paul the Apostle telling people that faith is a private thing when he traveled all over the Roman empire preaching about Jesus Christ.
