I've been doing this for as long as I can remember... the PC in the garage
is still XP SP2 but it can access all the shares on the two Vista machines
to play music.  Although I suppose upgrading isn't a bad idea in any case.

All I did was enable "File Sharing" in the Network and Sharing center (type
"Network" into the start menu to bring it up). Then any shares you've made
_should_ be accessible (mine are accessible to two XP boxes, my BSD NAS and
my Linux router).  I'm sorry if this is a silly question, but did you do
this?

I definitely have problems with shares when I throw my office VPN in the
mix... but that's for everything (the VPN takes over and I can't see ANY
local resources).
