I'm not sure about specific mainstream stories... but this topic recurs
regularly in skeptic and humanist circles.

Abstinence-only doesn't work.  Never has, very likely never will - in these
circles it's a classic example of a belief system trumping good science.

I think there's a great controversy simply because it's still being used
(and funded) despite no evidence of effectiveness against young pregnancy or
transmission of STDs.

Not only that but most of the programs available have, upon review, been
found to contain outright falsehoods and misrepresentations concerning
effectiveness of birth control, gender stereotyping and the facts of
abortion.

So we have government funded programs shown to be less effective and full of
misinformation... if that's NOT controversial it certainly should be.  ;^)
