Well, that's me, thus the aforementioned headphone radios set to a 
mindless music station.  I noticed during my high school studies, that 
true silence is a distraction for me.  But I have to walk a narrow path, 
because too 'engaging' of aural content and I pay attention to that 
instead of what I should be concentrating.

Then I would think headphones for him would be a good compromise.
