Well, there's actually a good reason for that:

The pilots who fly AF1 need to get in so many flight hours per month
in their aircraft to stay current, which means that AF1 has to go up
which is what the $350k is paying for.

In other words, AF1 can't be flown by guys who only fly when the
President has to go somewhere and they're on rotation - they need to
be current on their training.

Same reason you see jets flying around even if they're not on civil air patrol.

They take photos because they can, they're cool, and people like that
stuff.  They figure that as long as they need to train anyway (which
includes, btw, the ground personnel too) they might as well take some
publicity pictures.

So that makes sense to me.

It's the "don't tell the public who are working/living by Ground Zero"
part that hack me off.
