I believe the principles at work here may be that your muscles (all of them and you have a zillion) store blood sugar for fuel (muscle glycogen). When you deplete these stores, your body uses carbs to replace it meaning you can eat more carbs since you have to replace your glycogen stores. Thus moving about burns glycogen and you can eat carbs to replace.
