An assumption of altruism on the part of companies and corporate is
way too pie-in-the-sky for me.

I cannot think of a single company that cares more for their customers
than their profits.  They may take care of a customer because doing so
increases their profit, but as soon as that customer becomes a cost
center instead of a profit center, most businesses cannot wait to dump
them.

The insurance industry is the worst of this.  Their entire business
strategy based on years of actuarial science, is to minimize risk and
maximize profits.  If you want an eye-opening view of the real issues
with health care reform, study the positions of the insurance lobby.
