I left Canada to go to grad school. I was accepted into York when the Tory government at the time essentially zero'd out all social sciences research funding. The prof who I was to work with called me up and told me about his NSC grant getting cancelled. I was still accepted into York but would have to pay everything. So I looked at the second school on my list that accepted me, they offered a full tuition wavier, plus a very good stipend. So I moved to the US for grad school.
