I've been tracking my finances like that for over 40 years and I still have all the records. It's kinda fun sometimes to see exactly how much I spend on various items. Books and music are by far my biggest discretionary expense over the years. Another really interesting trend is how much less I spent on transportation costs since I moved to San Francisco five years ago.
When the boy toy inherited some money last year, we were able to pay off all the debts including my medical bills. It feels so free to not owe money.
