I think this is something born from the whole cloud computing business model
in that:

  1. You pay for what you use, if you only use it 2 months out of the year,
then only get it those two months
  2. You can scale up a large team for (n) months for a big project and
scale back down when its complete.
  3. You always have the latest version available.

I'm willing to be we will see a lot more of this in the future once the
pricing reaches its equilibrium.
