It's not completely possible to live without guns. It's possible to make them illegal. It's been tried in DC, with horrendous results. But suppose making guns illegal actually removed all guns from the country. Would there be violence among people if handguns did not exist? Is there violence in countries where gun control is draconian? It really doesn't matter since the issue of self-defense or hunting is not the reason for the 2nd amendment. In the words of Ice-T: The right to bear arms is because thats the last form of defense against tyranny. Not to hunt. Its to protect yourself from the police. Ice-T gets it.
