I suspect you have had very little experience with armed grannies. Most of us who have weapons know how to use them, and aren't afraid to do so.
Last person who messed with me, I took them out with a tire iron. I would have done even more damage to him if I had been armed. I'm only 4'11" but I cover every inch of ground I stand on.
