I agree, but I think religion is particularly prone to this type of distortion...and I don't think that's just by coincidence. When even the righteous interpretation of your scripture states that YOU are a chosen people, or that other faiths are sinners to be saved, or wayward souls to be converted...i just think it's easy to get that twisted into a false sense of certitude about one's convictions: Not only am I right, but i'm RIGHTEOUS.
SO while religion is not teaching the hate, i think it's teachings are ultimately divisive...and that is fertile breeding ground for hate.
