Correct. They knew the risks. Just like Test Pilots, fighter
pilots...firemen..cops etc. etc. 

But that doesn't mean they volunteered for suicide missions.

Now I'm not saying the space program has reached that stage for manned
flights...but the thing must be analysed.
No one wants to stop manned flights into space...but its human life, and
there must be an acceptable margin of safety.
And once that has been exceeded then the fleet should be grounded.

That's all I'm saying.
