I think we should ask the next group of astronauts if they think the potential dangers outweigh the benefits (one of which is just GOING into space)
>From what I've heard, they all want to go up on the next mission, and are willing to >do so tomorrow. Some things are risky. That is why being an astronaut carries with it such a high level of respect/envy. Not that I am minimizing the loss of these 7 people, but we lose more people to fireworks explosions on the 4th of July that we have lost in the history of space flight. We should definitely not stop! I agree funding levels should go up. I agree that some privatization is needed. But even as things are, they are doing good work. If you want to think really scary, wait 5 more years until we start getting privately funded space vehicle launches. The failure rate is going to go _way_ up. (I base this on a similar trend in ocean exploration as it moved from gov to private corp to science to general public) Let 'em fly. Jerry Johnson >>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 02/03/03 09:50AM >>> Nuh no nuh no.. I didn't say going into space was a waste. But maybe this accident might show that either budget is increased...or the program becomes too great a risk to human life and should be abandoned. If it isn't feasible in the state of the US Economy then it just isn't feasible. Better to abandon the program until such time that it can be revived with full funding than to risk further human life or hundreds of millions of dollars on missions that would fail. I know this isn't a popular opinion at all...but does that mean it is an opinion one should not even consider? Full funding, a full budget and a concerted push to get things right no matter the cost...or nothing. NASA officials have said repeatedly that they are being pushed to do things cheaper and faster because of the problems with funding. They have said on record that it is probable that budget cuts contribute to these accidents. -Gel -----Original Message----- From: Bill Wheatley [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] what? Thats crazy talk their budget has been squeezed so much and sometimes shit happens They died doing something they believed, they know they could possibliy die. Of course i find it alittle annoying they dont check the tiles in space everytime. I mean i would have assumed thats something they do a little space walk for to at least look. Maybe after this it might become something that IS done to be safe, dock the shuttle with the space station and check out the tiles. Some people think going into space is a waste but I think they are wrong ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~| Archives: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/index.cfm?forumid=5 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/index.cfm?method=subscribe&forumid=5 Structure your ColdFusion code with Fusebox.
