I think I remmeber an episode of DS9, where Quark and his bro and nephew ended up on earth druing the 50's, they were messing around with their universal translators a lot, it was a tiny device embeded in their ears, though your'e right, you never actually saw it.

I thought they had a translator - but just not one as good as the modern ones - ie, it needs more traning, and since they had spent time down there, maybe it was already trained.
