What about adopting a retired greyhound? They can be great with kids
too.

After living with our two for so long (Woody since November and Charlie
since May), we couldn't imagine not having them around.
All they do is adore you to death, and bounce around in joy to see you
come home. They are content to lie for hours and hours and hours all day
waiting for you to pet them.
And there's so many that need homes.
They aren't into a lot of excercise, preferring to sleep, but you can
adopt ones that are more playful than others and teach it tricks.
And Beth, I know you said greys don't like to sit, but our Woody sits
all the time. So he's a candidate for "gimmee paw" ;)
Sometimes you can even adopt young dogs that didn't make it ... our
second grey is only 2, she lost a toe as a puppy and was no good on a
track.

Cheers,
Erika

I grew up with Cairn Terriers and Scotties. Get a Cairns - they're
much more even tempered than scotties and just as active. Both breeds
are great with kids.
