i've seen CF developers land jobs (yes even in this market) for 90K and they
are absolutely terrible. they have poor logic, badly formed code, and take
days to figure out how to UPDATE or INSERT data from a web-based form.

now there is no doubt these people think more highly of their aptitude than
their work bears out, but a lot of companies spend no time really figuring
out if someone is really good. and in places that do portend to technically
screen these bad hires, the people qualifying the candidates have little
experience too.

couple that with [some] recruiters who just want their 30%, bad business
models ,and VCs bent on flipping their investment in 12-18 months....and
voila - you have today's market climate.

I agree with you. However not all good Application Programmers are good
Design Programmers.

Joe Ziems you should either not list your site or at least make some changes
to it even if you have to have a designer help you with the look and feel.
A simple site with a simple look would be better. If you have sites open to
the public list them as well.

I emailed John Menken, he says he should not have spoken this way. I agree
if I see a bad site I tend to not say anything. As a recruiter he should
not say anything so harsh. The message gets lost in the words. However he
is right to wonder if your experienced due the site you presented to him.

My Thoughts:
1. Web Designers should have very good looking sites.
2. Web Programmers should have very good looking code.

Number of years coding, Types of projects, and depth of projects should help
determine experienced or not.
