Here are your answers.

Is the system at 100% CPU? Not even close. All the CPU's are almost idle.

How much network traffic is there during this period? Minimal. The gigbit
connections are not maxed out.

Are you sure replication is even working? Yes, we tested replication first.

Are your servers on the same subnet? Yes.

Are the servers multihomed? Yes. We had to make specific setting to deal with
this.

Can you get a stack trace of the instance during the unresponsiveness? Never
tried.

If you directly access the instance through its own webserver (so not
through the cluster), is it also unresponsive? Never tried.

Are you sure your servers are synched to the same time source? Yes.

Right now these servers are being re-installed in standard installation mode
and will be used behind the load balancer. We are doing this because at this
point we can not trust Coldfusion's clustering and session replication and we
absolutely have to have these online Tuesday so we can be ready for the
Wednesday launch of our new customers. The initial launch will add about 14
thousand new CF applications to our system. So far we have not been happy with
the lack of documentation from Adobe and the total lack of support.
