We faced the same issue not to long ago with a new client's mail server.  Come 
to find out the solution was a rule in the Anti Virus software was killing the 
email.  CF would not through an error via a cfcatch try block so it ended up 
being at the OS level.  I hope this information helps you to reach a 
conclusion.  Our Anti Virus was McAfee.
