Matt,

This is a myth and belies ambition. I started my company by working part
time at a regular company doing development, and doing contract work on the
side for a year and a 1/2, building up clientele - by the time I quite my
regular job I had fully replaced it's income and then some. I also had a
solid base to launch my company full time, as well as an excellent pool of
capital - and it's gone gangbusters ever since. It just depends on who you
are and where you are at in life. There's living by faith - and then there's
wisdom. You need a balance of both to be well-rounded.

The big thing is that you have to jump all the way in. You can't start a
company moonlighting while you work somewhere else. If you can't bet
your livelihood on your business then you can't really expect anyone
else to either.
