Well.before I got through three screens of the Apache installation, I don't know what to put in the fields. Network Domain: I have a domain for my webserver, but I figure this out to be localhost or 127.0.0.1 since it's for local use only..? Server Name: The name of the notebook computer or localhost? Administrator's Email Address: (No not really.I know this one! :oP ) Rick From: Mike Kear [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, June 17, 2006 2:56 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Which version of CF should I download? Yes you dont have to have the whole thing. That ACME guide was originally set up to show new developers how they could have a very sophisticated and rock-solid development environment for free. For the vast majority of developers it provides everything they'll ever need to develop full-blown applications without costing a cent for dev software.
If you dont need the eclipse, dont use it. (I dont) and if you have MySQL already.. you dont need that part either. Just go down as far as the AC and you're done. For me the hardest part was figuring out the Apache configuration becuase i think their documentation is less than ideal. I think you might get the same issues. When you get to that point, where you're waning to set up sites on your machine, look for me on MSN and i'll help you through it. Maybe even send you mine. I wont send you mine now, becaue it'll probably confuse more than educate if you're not up to that point. Cheers MIke On 6/18/06, Rick Faircloth <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: G'Day Mike. (probably evening down under). Concerning ACME.I don't have any plans at this point to use CFEclipse, so before I get very deeply into the ACME approach, a question.can I basically disregard the CFEclipse part of the document and rely on it for installing Apache, CF7, and MySQL? My situation is a lot like yours - i'm running a oneman shop. I dont have time to stuff about with things that arent going to have any relevance for my business so i dont play with things just because they're new. I'll be on line tomorrow too. If you see me on msn feel free to give me a yell. I've been where you are (although i didnt leave the update quite as long as you!) See ya tomorrow. But I've had that happen on other files.the first second after the download starts, an error like that comes up. Usually, however, I can just overwrite the file, but not this time.I've got it anyway. It's late here, 10:15 pm, so I'll wait to start installing Apache, CFMX7, DW8, and Fireworks tomorrow. I'm going to have a look at all of it. Hope you have a good day.I guess you day's just starting down under? I appreciate all your help.I'm sure I'll need more! :o) G'Day Mate, Rick From: Mike Kear [mailto: [EMAIL PROTECTED] <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> ] Sent: Friday, June 16, 2006 8:56 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Which version of CF should I download? G'day Rick Glad you're going to give that a try. Frankly all this debate back and forth about one server over another and whether you want to have multiple jruns or not is just confusing when you're getting started. It is relevant, but not in your case just yet. you should worry about all that stuff when you're ready to set upa production server. Frankly I've been using ColdFusion for 10 years now, and CFMX7 since release day, and never had to set up a production server. I use Apache (which I was reluctant to do for ages because I took a look at the config files and freaked out) and it's the best thing i've done for ages. Apache adn CFMX7 is brilliant. I'm on MSN for the next 8 hours at least if you want to chat there - [EMAIL PROTECTED] and i've got skype going too if you want to chat there - MikeKear Oh and your question about ACME - i just opened it in FireFox and it went ok. I can send it to you if you prefer, but it's 7.5MB so be warned. Rick, I havent finished reading through this thread, but i suspect most of your questions will be answered if you follow the step-by-step instructions for the ACME setup - apache, ColdFusion, MySQL, Eclipse. I suspect you know what you need to konw about MySQL and Eclipse or not is a different issue. but the ACME site gives you everything you need to know, and the really good thing is while the install scripts give you a bazillion and a quarter questions and possibilities, teh ACME step-by-step lets you skp over all the thigns you can accept as defaults (which is most things)> I find with new software, all too often you're asked to choose between alternatives when you're installing, but given no help as to why you'd choose one or the other. I STRONGLY urge you to try this - it'll let you skip over all these server issues, get the things installed and get to the real issue, which is tinkering with the new coldfusion. You're setting up a development/test environment as far as I can see, not a productoin server. If you get something that's less than optimal it's not a huge deal you're not going to be having a lot of traffic. What you want now is to get it going and start playing with it. Follow the instructions in the ACME guide, and you'll have a good, solid CFMX7 installation in less than an hour. http://www.stephencollins.org/acme/ Cheers Mike Kear Windsor, NSW, Australia Certified Advanced ColdFusion Developer AFP Webworks http://afpwebworks.com ColdFusion, PHP, ASP, ASP.NET <http://ASP.NET> hosting from AUD$15/month On 6/17/06, Rick Faircloth <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Now video encoding I know something about...yes!
