And what do you do when the client comes along and says we want to see what
has been done?

The easiest thing in that case, would be to export from the SVN because you
know it is going to be the latest stable build. And I would prefer to have a
happy client, than a sad client that is going to jump up and down when their
is unfinished work causing problems when you need to do a demonstration.

I don't care bad practice is bad practice.
