Actually, with Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5, this setting is PURELY on the
client.  Having administered one for over a year, there was never a place to
set up an autoresponder without a client.  It could be controlled from the
Administrator once it was set up, but the client had to be in the loop
initially.

You are right and wrong.  Some servers require the client to set this up/
Other require the client to handle it.  And then some allows this to be set
up on the server.
