When you are joining a load of tables and views together, sometimes
from different databases (requiring you to refer to the table by its
fully qualified name), it can become unreadable. The simple mental
lookup table required to associate aliases with tables is a small
overhead and a huge advantage when you are writing really long
queries. You also often don't get to choose how the database is named
so it helps to be able to put aliases on stupidly named database
objects.
