I think you misunderstood what's the "top section of the middle panel". That's the "quick entry" area that you can use to quickly create an item or search for one. It has nothing to do with the currently selected item in the list/calendar view. If you want to edit an item's title, you have to either double click on its rectangle in the calendar or click once on its title in the detail (right-most) view.
What the delete key did in your case was remove the item from the current selection *only*. Try searching for it (Ctrl-F, followed by its title, and then Enter).
