Well I got back from London a couple of weeks ago with a few
anthologies like GATHERING THE BONES, THE DARKER SIDE or DARK
TERRORS 6, all featuring short stories from some of my favorites
like Mehitobel Wilson, Joel Lane, Conrad Williams or Michael
Marshall Smith (though the latter is on probation after his
incredibly disappointing follow-up to The Straw Men.)
Also got ahold of Joel Lane's novel THE BLUE MASK though I'm not
sure it qualifies as horror. One thing I'm sure of, knowing
Lane, it certainly doesn't qualify as mainstream :-) But since I
loved his previous novel FROM BLUE TO BLACK, a beautiful and
subtly horrific elegy set in the neo-goth scene (or whatever you
should call the Joy Division crowd) I'm pretty much ready to
read his laundry list should he decide to publish it.
FROM BLUE TO BLACK reads a bit like Velvet Goldmine if it had
told the Kurt Cobain story instead of Bowie's. And if M.R. James
or E.F. Benson had lived in the 20th century...
