Hi,

Here's my top ten(or so) books for 2004

  1. Fritz Leiber & H.P. Lovecraft - WRITERS OF DARK.
Excellent selection of Leiber stories, along with
Leiber's Lovecraft essays and Lovecraft's letters to
Leiber. Are Fritz and Jonquil's letters to Lovecraft
still extant? Including the complete corrospondance
would have made this collection perfect.

  2. Robert E. Howard - THE BLOODY CROWN OF CONAN and
THE SAVAGE TALES OF SOLOMON KANE. The two best
value-for-money books of the year.

 3. Philip K. Dick - LIES, Inc. Actually one of his
more mediocre novels, but the new Vintage edition is
notable for being the first time the complete revision
is available in book form.

 4. Lord Dunsany - IN THE LAND OF TIME AND OTHER
FANTASY TALES. I also enjoyed FIVE PLAYS, PLAYS OF
GODS AND MEN, 51 TALES, DON RODRIGUEZ, and the JORKENS
collections, but I didn't want to make this an
all-Dunsany list.

 5. Kiyohiko Azuma - AZUMANGA DAIOH(4 vols.) Japanese
comic strips that have nothing to do with horror,
except this one strip about a ghostly fart...

 6. Koji Suzuki - DARK WATER. I still haven't seen any
of the movies based on his works, but i do like the
books that have been translated so far--this one being
my favorite.

 7. Algernon Blackwood - INCREDIBLE ADVENTURES. Not
one of my favorite Blackwood collections, but it's
still nice to see one of the original collections back
in print.

 8. William Hope Hodgson - THE HOUSE ON THE BORDERLAND
AND OTHER MYSTERIOUS PLACES. BORDERLAND is one of my
favorite novels, and I always enjoy re-reading it, and
the Carnacki stories were better than I remembered
them to be.

 9. Hideshi Hino - THE RED SNAKE. I was excited when
Cocoro announced their Hino Horror reprint
series--this first one is still my favorite.

 10. H.P. Lovecraft - THE DREAMS IN THE WITCH HOUSE
AND OTHER WEIRD STORIES. Although this collection
mostly seems like an excuse to get the corrected "The
Shadow out of Time" in a Penguin edition, it's still a
nice companion to the previous two Penguin Lovecraft
collections, and it does contain some of his more
under-rated stories such as "The Shunned House", "The
Strange High House in the Mist", "The Cats of
Ulthar", and the title story.

   bye bye
    jty
