Ah, but Tivo service is more than mere information, of course You can get
online and look up the schedules for your shows, that isn't the point,
the point is that the Tivo service provides you with a VERY convenient
method of programing your recording device, the Tivo box, to record your
shows. You just open the schedule, select the show you want to record,
and click. Easy, simple. Most VCR and other recording devices do not
make it that easy, not by far. A LOT of people have trouble just setting
the clocks on their VCRs. You can't provide services like this without
cost to yourself, so if they do provide it for free to others, they will
have to increase the price or sales, or both, of their recording devices.
The cost has to be covered somehow or they will be unable to make a
profit, or even stay in business.

I think they should make the service optional, and make it so the machine
can be programed without the use of that service of theirs. They do use
a free TV schedule service on the web, I think. I see the Tivo link on
it all the time. It used to be Clicktv.com, but that died and was
replaced by Zap2it.com. Anyway, Maybe Tivo could make it so that you can
use your ISP connection setup in order to get data from Zap2it.com. :)
