John is correct, the way on Linux to communicate
which Java location to use is not through $PATH
variable, but through a symlink /usr/bin/java.
Could you create symlink:
/usr/bin/java64 to /opt/jre1.6.0_64/bin/java
to control Java upgrade path globally without
modifying J shortcuts?
