When we pulled the body off my dad's '63 Vette years ago, the frame was so
rotted it immediately collapsed under its own weight.  The body structure
was holding it together.

Yes, but that doesn't change the fact that convertibles need more support
from below than coupes & sedans. A full-frame convertible with a rotted
frame could suffer the same fate.
