The stock Chevy HEI works pretty well on a street engine. Just use good wires and lighter springs to match your engine/trans/gear combo. The crane adjustable vac canister and spring kit is a good low cost modification to help fine tune it. MSD stuff is good for racing but not really needed on  street engine. That money can be put to better use in another area in my opinion

I used the HEI that was in the motor. I then went to a MSD coil/module/cap / wires.not long after I did all that it wouldn't start.There was no spark. Made me mad enough I went out and bought the ready to run MSD unit.
