The donations and all vary from place to place. You would not believe the
places that can't get vets to donate skill and time. We will have to
disagree about the price tag. People tend to think that the way it is in
their part of the world is the way it is everywhere. It is not.
Rescues don't get dogs and then destroy them if they can't be replaced. They
keep them

Unfortunately a $300 adoption price tag shoots the rescuer right in the
foot! The idea should be to place these dogs so they avoid being destroyed.
When you ask $300 you will lose many, many prospective homes because they
can go buy a pup with no baggage for less...$300 adoption fee is NOT
conducive to placing dogs!!! With as much volunteer help out there a spay or
nueter can be almost free...with POP certs and Vets donating time and
resources, there is no excuse for a $300 price tag. Just my opinion!!!
Rescuers HAVE to find a way to do it cheaper!!!

The economy is hurting everyone and all is very expensive now. If you know
anything about how much things cost you would never think 300 was a lot for
an adoption. There are some rescues that get a lot of donations so they can
afford to adopt out for a lesser fee. Maybe the shelter the person spoke of
lost funding and had to raise the fees?

I was involved in Basset Hound rescue for years and our fees were $50 when I
started and 20 years later had gone up to $100. I burned out about 3 years
ago so I don't know if they've raised them since then. Frequently for very
senior or special needs dogs we'd waive the fee completely.

Well I would certainly agree that $300 is just plain NUTS!!!!!! Why would
anyone do that when you can get a sweet little puppy with decent breeding
for less????? Crazy!!!! It amazes me when some of these rescues ask $500 or
more to "adopt" one of their precious babies...just makes no sense at
all!!!! Makes me question thier real motives!!!!!!

A shelter here in Texas has been trying to get me to adopt an older long
coat female Chi. She is 3 years old and has one eye missing and they want a
$300 adoption fee.

Try a regular county shelter...or city!!! Here in CA it is $65 and that
includes shots and spay or nueter!!! You must have been looking at
"Rescues". That is about as cheap as it gets!!!!

A lot more of those in shelters would get adopted if the fees weren't so
high. I tried several in this area to adopt a chi...fees up as high as
$300. I was lucky and found one someone needed a new home for. I can
afford the food, vet care, etc but not a $300 fee also.

I visit our local shelters often...I do a little volunteer work...and what I
see each month makes me cry everytime. The shelters are over-run with the
sweetest, most adorable little Chi's you ever saw...throw aways...there are
not even close to enough adopters out there...they are being KILLED by the
hundreds everyday.
