My girls are so in-tuned to me and my illness. I am having sleep apnea and Abbey jumps on my chest to wake me up - she is so amazing. They both know also when my legs are bad and will spend hours licking them. I think they should use animals way more in the medical field. I bet they could detect breast cancer before a mammogram could. The one thing that both my girls do that drive me nuts is lick the inside on my nose, someone said it because they like the salt. I do not know why they do it, but I have not had a cold in a long time. Abbey is a registered service dog and as soon as I can get Maggie trained she will be too. She is already being trained by her sister. My girls also go to the Care Home for the elders and they are so sweet with everyone. I know I have said this before but it still amazes me when I think about it. There is a very sweet older woman who is in a wheelchair and is blind but was a dog lover her whole life. So I always take Abbey to her first and Abbey sits on her lap and every time she licks her eyes. The first time she did it it brought tears to my eyes and her families who happened to be there. They has asked me if she could hold Abbey as Dogs were always her passion. I wish I could of gotten a picture of it. I am having to move my Dad from this home to another home so I will miss all of the residents. But we have 8 new ones that my girls can get to know. Its a much smaller home and has higher quality of care, one RN and one LVN and one MA for 7 residents. Plus the owner has a chihuahua. This place was put in my life by many prayers and it was meant to be as we just happened to take our girl scouts there at Christmas time and I knew it was the perfect place for my dad. Thank God for all his miracles! When you think about it they can train them to smell one ingredient in a drug or a bomb - they are such amazing babies. Nan

To: [email protected] Date: Thursday, January 13, 2011, 4:28 PM I have read that a dog can tell a lot about you by licking and smelling your skin. They can detect sickness, disease, etc by "tasting" and smellng you...part of how they gather info about each other as well. Dogs that are trained to dectect cancer on humans use smell and taste to detect it...it is amazing what they "learn" from just those two senses. Dolly & Desi love to lick me. Desi is always giving kisses and if he isn’t doing that, a good deal of time he is licking himself. I have heard that they lick to get the salt from our natural perspiration...as that occurs everywhere – on our hands, necks, feet, legs, etc. But, I have also heard that dogs lick as a sign of their affection for their owner. Thank goodness I never sweat or smell, I am a princess after all (LOL). My girlfriend made a very natural lotion and my daughter would put it on her legs because Sami loved to lick it off. She loved the way it felt :) It was so funny to watch him!
