Hi Lynn, Henderson is a city that is at the south end of Las Vegas. It is actually pretty close to the airport.
I live in North Las Vegas which actually starts a little east of Las Vegas at the south side. Where I live is quite a bit Northwest (maybe 20 miles from the strip). I have a grocery store and little strip mall about 1/3 of a mile to the south of me; we have a Target that just got built a couple years ago that is just kitty-corner from out communities walls; I have a Costco, Best Buy, Walgreens, Walmart, Bed Bath & Beyond, Bath & Body Works and other strip mall type of store about ½ mile from my house. Our elevation is a little higher and the temps are a little cooler – but only about 5 degrees or so. The community that I live in is right on the west edge of Las Vegas (it is a very huge city as far as residents), and I actually live about six houses east of the street (Decatur) that separates Las Vegas and North Las Vegas. I used to have a beautiful view of the Strip from my living room, but they had to finish building the houses in my community and the one across the street…no more Strip view, just roof views. But Las Vegas then extends quite a bit north and west more than I am. There was a huge migration of people in the last ten years which has turned desert and rocks to neighborhoods. I lived in California for 50 years, we had the Santa Ana winds, but these winds here can be pretty fierce once in a while…I was actually very surprised when I moved here. It is not windy every day, and I am thinking that maybe December to April is when the winds usually are the fastest. The allergens that I see listed on the Nasonex site are usually Mulberry, Alder & Ash. The northwest side of the valley is very nice and new. The thing that is hardest for me is how to get somewhere and how far things are apart here. For example…doctors are the things that I am most familiar with. I found a doctor that is maybe 3 or 4 miles from me. I found my spine specialist about 10 miles from me. The spine specialist refers me to the pain management doctor who is about 15 miles from me. When the pain management doctor does the injections he goes to a surgery center that is probably 20 miles northeast of his office. The neurosurgeon that I went to is 30 miles from here. That is a very long way. The hospital that he will do the surgery at is maybe a mile or so from that. In California, I would never think of going to a doctor that is 30 miles away, but depending where in the valley they are located it can be that far to go. It is beautiful here, and we are basically surrounded by mountains. Mount Charleston, Red Rock Canyon, the Sheep Mountains, and I don’t even know the names of all the ones on the east side. The freeway/highway that surrounds the entire valley is mostly on the higher grounds and on the news when they are talking about the traffic they call it the spaghetti bowl. Desi had been having runny eyes and the vet said that it was the allergens. At his instruction, I was giving Desi ¼ of a 24mg Benadryl every 8 hours at the most. The last time that I took him for his Bordatella vaccine the vet looked at his eye and said he had an infection…I hope it wasn’t an infection all along. I got a return message from our vet to a message that I sent him about having to board Dolly & Desi when I go for surgery…he told me that when I bring Dolly & Desi to be boarded that I can bring one of Desi’s treat toys and they will let him out of his kennel and eat his food on the floor. Whew…that saves me having to think up any ideas of other ways that he would not gouge his food. I will bring the easiest one to fill, that will at least help the kennel staff. That one you can hear the food when it is still inside and Desi actually will stop pushing it when he doesn’t hear the sound anymore. That is the first video that I had posted of Desi when I started the treat toys to feed him. It is only going to be 3 days until I pick them up, so when he gets home I will just have him use the others randomly until I think that he has forgotten any speedy way to eat more kibble at a time (I don’t think that he really can do it on this one because there really isn’t any way to make it come out faster unless the kennel staff adjusts the top part and I will give them step-by-step instructions maybe coming in a few days ahead of time to show them. I will have to put on the instructions sheet in huge bold print highlighted in yellow that he MUST eat from this toy. I think that my vet will be looking in on them often and make sure because this is a medical issue if he starts gorging again. That is one thing that I no longer have to worry about. He wrote that he will make sure that they are comfortable and loved and played with. That is a huge comfort to me, too. Well, I have Dolly & Desi taken care of, I just need to go to another doctor for a second opinion and then if I like that one better (there is nothing wrong with the first one) or my spine surgeon cannot get in touch with him and get me an appointment either tomorrow or early next week, I will use the first one. Then I can make arrangements to drive to the hospital and then leave my car in the parking lot until someone can drive it home for me. I am thinking if my neighbors pick me up, one can drive their car back and the other can drive my car back. Everything else I am leaving in the caring hands of God. He has expressed interest in moving to Las Vegas because of the golf aspect. Are you near Henderson Joan? But all that you have posted about allergens, high winds there, now has me dead set against it, since he is highly allergic to pollen. Thanks. I never really thought about it, but I didn't realize dogs could suffer the same allergic reactions to high pollen counts. Poor Desi and Dolly. It's a shame because it is so beautiful there. How we really need this. Both Dolly & Desi come in with runny eyes. Desi has been on Benadryl for that and Dolly has the Atarax that will hopefully stop the runny eyes and also keep her lungs clear.
