I'm afraid both ways have problems.
First, with manifest property, is authority and laziness.
Second, with automatic conversion, is inconvenient when you install
extension not from gallery -- will this functionality be gone
completely in stable release?  If not, please consider this way:
automagically build d/l link from referring page when you actually d/l
extension file.  Not the best way, I must admit, because of forums
posts or news or emails with direct links, but maybe implement all
three methods?  Say, 'homepage' link from manifest, 'gallery' link
from id and 'downloaded' from referring page.
