Hm. On a duplex mismatch I'd expect CRC errors, runts and (if in half 
duplex) late collisions. And if...

..your switch isn't managed, it should do autonegotiation only. I'd try 
autoneg on the workstation as well, and if that performs badly, try 
100/half.

Does your switch at least show the speed/duplex mode the port ends up 
in, even if you can't manage it?

If your sniffer can capture packets with CRC errors in the Ethernet 
frame, I'd look at that, especially if the box claims to be in full duplex.
