Only if all the devices understand each other.  As I understand it autoneg works in a 
similar manner to modem training.  Some devices however will set a preference and will 
train to that setting which not always understood by other devices.  In other cases 
such as Cisco 10 Meg etherports are hard set when sent to a port with auto configured 
often the auto port will show full duplex that is not true.  Sometimes it will 
indicate all is ok but the error counts will rise.

Some things want both ends set to auto others do not.  Some will only work with 
autoneg set.

There is no hard and fast rules that I have found.  What I have found however are some 
quick ways to detect the issues.  Those below.
