John, et al.

I think that was just to become familiar with setting up a reverse telnet 
session and that the technology may well be encountered in the "real-world" 
networking environment for applications where one would not want to Telnet 
into (F/W) etc.

Looks like for the new proposed CCIE lab you won't have to configure this on 
the day one and will have just a switch box (such as you recommended) as 
won't have that much time to accomplish basic router configurations.

Time will be spent on complex configurations, BGP etc.
