Aha! It is now working for me on a mac and with control-space, getting a popup 
menu exactly as you say and as I want!

Perhaps I never actually tried this combination before, when I was just trying 
lots of combinations and stumbled across control-. by accident. For what it's 
worth control-. does not give a menu and the set of completions that it allows 
you to select from is different/wrong. It's some other feature.

In any event, I think that the new text about keys to invoke completion should 
be changed to say command-space for the mac too :-)

Also BTW I now see that when a completion is highlighted in the menu a second 
little popup shows the args and documentation, which is very helpful and 
related to my other request for arglist-on-space (which would also still be 
nice some day, since to get this completion feature you have to type an 
incomplete symbol and select it in the menu).
