You seem to have it now.
Understand that clonezilla is basically an excellent collection of scripts
and programs.
When doing a whole disk, it grabs the mbr and partition table. Each
partition it finds gets processed sequentially and separately.
the problem of large to small disk is more a problem of ntfsclone and
partimage that clonezilla uses to clone an ntfs partition. As long as each
instance of ntfs partition has room to fit you're good to go.
As far as unpartitioned space, as long as it is on the back end, it gets
ignored by clonezilla.
