I've made some progress in cloning to a smaller hard drive. This time,
instead of cloning the entire hard drive, I used Steven's method:
clone partitions. This time, I was able to get Windows to boot on the
smaller destination hard drive.
My problems are far from over. I tested whether the restored image was
the same as the source drive using a simple method: I placed some
files on the desktop of my source drive before using Clonezilla to
save the partitions of the source drive to an image. After restoring
this image to the destination drive, I compared the hashes of these
files on both the source and destination drives and compared them.
They were different, which means the files were modified at some point
during the imaging or restoration process by Clonezilla. I also
noticed that the icons of those files were missing.
So basically, did Steven's method as described in
CloneToASmallerDrive_0.2.pdf work for me? Yes and no. I got Windows to
boot, but hashes proved that the files were damaged or modified.
Unfortunately, this is not good enough.
By the way, I found a partial solution to the problem of not knowing
the exact sizes of the source drive's partitions. Since I had to
resize the bigger partition, I typed in an exact number that I
remembered (e.g. 30,000 MiB). This way, I knew that the exact size of
the corresponding partition on the destination drive also had to be
exactly 30,000 MiB (just an example) in order to be properly prepared
for image restoration. However, there remains one problem: I only know
the approximate size of the smaller Windows 7 partition (100 MiB). I
don't know its exact size since I did not resize it myself. The best
guess I had was 100,00 MiB.
If anybody out there knows what I'm doing wrong in using the method
Steven describes in CloneToASmallerDrive_0.2.pdf, please help me! I
don't understand why Windows 7 can be bootable but yet so many files
can be damaged. I'm trying to do everything possible to avoid a new
installation of Windows.
