Guillermo, en matemática no se investiga solo para obtener aplicaciones, también se investiga para conocer más la matemática en sí. De hecho, es bueno que ese avance se de forma independiente y que no todo tenga que estar atado a una aplicación para que sea de interés. Revisá la historia de la matemática y vas a ver que muchos grandes descubrimientos matemáticos se dieron sin ninguna aplicación inmediata, pero que sin ellos hoy no estarías ni mandando un mail. En cuanto a este problema en particular, según cuenta Andres, lo interesante es que es un enunciado del que ningún matemático pudo dar una respuesta en 70 años, lo que obviamente lo hace interesante además de el hecho de contar con nuevas técnicas que permitirían atacar problemas similares. Si te parece que el problema no es interesante porque no puede aplicarse hoy en día, entonces me parece que tenes una visión un poco limitada de lo que es la matemática.
