that's a lot of work.. best of luck to you...

this is a hard one, since it really depends on whether i'm looking at servers,
developer's workstations or user desktops. which are you looking to address,
or which is more important to you? or will you be attempting to generalize?
one thing i dislike about existing distributions, though i understand why they
are that way, is the "one project, one package" mentality. when compiling
from source, you can choose which feature set you want in the final product.
but compiling from source takes time and induces integration risks.
it would be really interesting to be able to request binaries built with
specific options and have them packaged and delivered over the network by an
automated system that does unit testing and compiling. it would really mix
the best of source and binary worlds IMHO.

coherent set up tools for use in post-install administration. SuSe and
Mandrake both do quite well in that regard IMHO.
packages that work dependably when installed and which have sensible
dependency chains (neither too spartan nor too demanding).
security updates that come out quickly.
speaking of which, i've fallen deeply in love with urpmi in MDK9. being able
to say "urpmi programName" and have it ask for the right CD and install the
proper package (and any deps it may have) is heavenly. i haven't looked into
how to make it search RPM repositories on the 'net yet, but i plan on doing
so....
