Actually, the /usr/lib/win32 path is deprecated. I remember reading why somewhere, but I can't recall where exactly (perhaps in the codecs tarball README). These days at least MPlayer looks for /usr/lib/codecs. I know a few players, if not most, will look in both places by default. If not, you can always symlink win32 to codecs. I haven't had any problems with this arrangement.
