Curious, do you have Xine installed?  How about Mplayer?  If so then
give them a try.  I've never used Totem so I'm not sure where the
issue might be but if Mplayer or Xine works then you know you have a
configuration issue with Totem.  Also do you know the wmv file you are
playing works?  These things might be obvious but are offen
overlooked.
