Okay let me ask you this; we installed sshd with apt-get, how is dpkg going
to affect things? Are apt-get and dpkg compatible? I'm not even sure I
understand what I am asking... such a noob.

Yes, as mentioned dpkg is like rpm for SuSE, Fedora and Mandriva and apt is like YaST, yum, apt-rpm...
As with dependencies and compatibity these should be resolved for you... that is the beauty of debian based distros.
Not to be knocking on RPM based distros and other. I actually use Fedora at work, and have yum or apt-rpm installed on most of them. If you are farmiliar with these tools then apt should be very similar. You can install via apt-get to your hearts content and the dependencies are handled.
