Anjana:

Thank you for explaining this so well to me. I went and brought out my
last test results (I think I shared them with you before after I
received them, can't remember) & this is what they say. I don't
remember if I have the results from my very first biopsy back in Jan.
2004 or not, this is from 7/10/06 & they are done at Genzyme Genetics
in Westborough, Ma. According to their PCR test, a 1 in 100,000
transcripts (0.001%). They have a little graph showing me at 0.01 log %
and up where it says Results: shows Positive: Major breakpoint
(0.007%). The FISH test is Negative. It's done at Genzyme in Santa
Fe, NM. Don't know why two different genetics labs are used. I just
noticed this.....thought it was all done in New Mexico. Oh well.
I hope you can figure this out or understand it. Thanks again for all
your great information.

A different subject: my mother has been having a terrible time with
her platelets. Back beginning in April she noticed herself being all
bruised up and had sores in her mouth, so went to the doctor and they
found her platelet level extremely low and started her on Prednizone
20mgs., I believe. She kept going back for testing and it showed they
responded and started up again and he would cut her dosage down each
time until he had her on 5mg. daily. They had reached a high of 281
and by end of July (her last appointment as she then came here to be
with me through August and went back home to Fl. on 24th) they had
started to drop a little bit. When she went to her appointment around
the end of August they had dropped a bit more, but he decided to take
her off the Prednizone totally. Well, last Monday she woke not feeling
well at all and had sores in her mouth again, so went in to see the dr.
Her platelets were down to 1 and he immediately began her on an I.V.
treatment of Immune Gammaglobulin (12 bottles, she said), she went back
the next day and they hadn't risen any and they did another round of
the Immune Gammaglobulin (she's also back on the Prednizone.).
Yesterday they had come up to 5 but this morning when she went back
they were down to 3 and he bumped up the Prednizone to 60mgs. daily
and she's to come back in the morning for more testing. He told her if
they had dropped again, he was going to do a Platelet Transfusion.
This doctor is supposedly the best Hem/Onc there and her primary doctor
also told her that he is treating her the best they know how to. They
both have told her it is an Auto-Immune Disease of the Platelets & they
have no explanation as to what causes this. My brothers and I are
all very concerned that she's getting the right treatment & if she's
been tested for other things that might cause this., etc. Plus, we all
are wondering "why" he took her off the Prednizone the first time when
it was clearly showing that her platelets were dropping. That just
didn't make sense to me & I don't think Mom has been thinking to
clearly to ask him. My lab paperwork shows that a normal range for
platelets is between 140 to 440. Is that 14,000 to 44,000 or 140,000
to 440,000? I used to know, but forgotten. Should she have a bone
marrow biopsy, would that tell anything as to the cause? I think we
are all stumped here on this one. I'm not use to having a doctor say
they don't know what causes it. Thanks for letting me ramble......just
keep her in your prayers.

Love,
Suzieq
